Bioactivity Charantin is a hypoglycemic agent isolated from bitter melon. The antidiabetic activity of bitter melon is attributed to different mechanisms, including increased pancreatic insulin secretion, reduced insulin resistance, increased peripheral and skeletal muscle cell glucose utilization, inhibition of intestinal glucose absorption, and inhibition of key enzymes in the gluconeogenic pathway[1].
